A multi-sited exploration of the ease of mainstreaming the Term Snuby®, mother-infant skin to skin undergarment, in all births up to the point of discharge from maternity services (<2 weeks).
Why?
The Snuby study’s focus is skin-to-skin contact between mothers and their babies. The study will look at what effect skin-to-skin contact has on babies’ temperatures, breast and formula feeding, and mother-baby bonding in the first 2 weeks of life.
The study will compare mothers and babies using the Snuby® garment to mothers and babies undergoing routine care.
The study will also collect the views of mothers and maternity healthcare workers on skin-to-skin contact using the Snuby™.
This study will further look at the durability of the Snuby™ with sequential multiple users.
What is involved?
The duration of the Snuby study is 2 weeks
The researcher will provide the Snuby™ garment with some instructions to explain how to safely use the garment and a diary for you to fill in.
You will be asked to take your baby’s temperature with the thermometer provided before using the Snuby™ garment, and after 30 minutes using the Snuby™ garment and to record the findings in the diary provided. Instructions and a thermometer will be supplied by the researcher with a flow chart for guidance.
In your diary you are encouraged to complete the sections on when you used the Snuby™ and what effect it had on you and your baby’s behavior.
You will need to be sat down, leant back or laid down when using the Snuby™. It has not been tested yet for use when standing or walking so please do not use the Snuby standing up.
At the end of 2 weeks you will be asked to complete a post questionnaire about your experience and return the diary, Snuby™ and thermometer to Research Midwives office.
Who is it for?
Healthy women aged 16 and over following any type of birth with a healthy baby are able to take part. The researcher will ensure you and your baby are suitable for this particular study.
